How to host a Watch and Eat of the movie Ratatouille

My husbands favorite movie is Ratatouille, and it is something we watch at least once in the year. But for this years birthday I wanted to go above and beyond. So I planned a menu that corresponded to what they ate in the movie, and timed it so we would be eating them at the same time as the movie. It just so happened that I was sick the week of his birthday so I needed an easy way to accomplish this tasting menu, and in came Trader Joe’s to help me get it accomplished. You can follow this menu just like I did from Trader Joe’s or make them from scratch, either way you will have a delicious time!

Here is the menu. I used canva to make it look special!

The Menu

Above is everything you need to purchase from Trader Joes. If you buy one of everything, that was a good amount for 2 adults and a toddler. There is room for variation of course. Add different cheeses and fruit, or try a different creamy soup! Generally this is an assemble an enjoy menu. The one thing you have to make is the Ratatouille. Below is how to!

Rat-ba-tootie

Fun fact, they say what they actually made in the movie is more of a confit Byaldi. And since we can’t taste the movie verison, here is mine.

  1. In a pan, sauté half an onion. Once translucent, add in the can of Grecian style eggplant, tomato & onion. Add in a sprinkle of thyme. The goal is to let these flavors marry on low for a little bit, but they will cook more later. ~6 minute sauté is enough
  2. While the eggplant and onion is sautéing, thinly slice the yellow and zucchini squash. I used a mandoline to achieve the thinness I required, but if you don’t have that, its okay just go as thin as you can!
  3. In the bottom of an oven safe dish, spread a thin (.5 in) even layer. And then layer varying from each type of squash in a circular pattern until the whole dish is filled. You can prep this step ahead of time and leave in the fridge until ready to cook.
  4. When you are ready, then just bake for 15-25 minutes at 375 F when you are ready to eat. The squash should be fork tender. Sprinkle with some flake salt and garnish with a chive stem! Voila! I also served this with a simple mixed green salad!

The cadence is generally every 20 minutes another course. Most of this you can prep at the start of the movie and then just serve as the movie progresses, so everyone can watch together!
